Methodist church berates northern youths over Igbo threat

The Council of Bishop, Methodist Church Nigeria, has condemned the threat by northern youths that the Igbo should leave the North or face annihilation.
The council made its position public in a communiqué issued at the end of its 35th council held in at the Methodist Theological Institute in Umuahia, Abia State.
The council, which was presided over by the prelate, Dr. Samuel Chukwuemeka Kanu, said the quit notice by the northern youths to the Igbo amounted to hatred and should treated as treason. The clergymen blamed the rise in agitation of various forms in the South-East on the failure of the Federal Government to implement the Reconciliation, Reconstruction and Rehabilitation plan.
The council urged the National Assembly to revisit the bill on the South-East Development Commission in order to give the zone a sense of belonging in the country.
The church leaders also urged the Federal Government to respect the Federal Character Commission in employment and appointment, adding that the forefathers of the country created the commission in order to promote unity in the country.
The clergymen also condemned attacks by herdsmen in the South-East and South-South geopolitical zones.
The communiqué read in part, “The church believes that the present herdsmen that kill and ravage communities in Nigeria today are different from the herdsmen in Nigeria.
“Their mode of operation is similar to that of Boko-Haram and we suspect that they have strong connection with ISIS.  The council, therefore, encourages the Federal Government to intensify efforts at stamping out the menace of the so-called herdsmen. It is important to investigate who they are and who their sponsors are.”
